OIM3600 Computational Thinking with Python
4 Advanced Liberal Arts Credits
This course is designed for business students who want to gain a strong foundation in computer science while learning how to think computationally to solve real-world problems. Emphasizing learning how to learn, the course focuses on developing the skills needed to acquire new programming knowledge independently and apply it effectively in business contexts.
Students will learn Python as the primary programming language and become familiar with Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative development. The course emphasizes computational thinking, problem-solving strategies, and the practical application of programming concepts rather than rote memorization of syntax.
Throughout the semester, students will engage in ungraded exercises, four progressively challenging graded labs culminating in an equity portfolio management system, six quizzes, and a final exam. Classroom participation is essential, as students will present solutions, discuss approaches, and collaborate to deepen their understanding.
By the end of the course, students will be proficient in Python and version control, and able to apply computational thinking and programming skills to analyze business problems, design solutions, and implement them effectively. This course prepares students to confidently tackle complex business challenges with a computational mindset.
Prerequisites: (FME 1000 or EPS 1000) and (FME 1001 or MOB 1010)
