How has blue, white, and pink collar work changed in the United States across the past century? This advanced liberal arts course builds on the foundation and intermediate level courses of your liberal arts career and focuses on the historical experiences of American workers from the turn of the twentieth century to today. We will study industrialization and deindustrialization, labor union strikes, workplace regulations and protections, patterns of migration and immigration, and the relationships of labor with the liberation movements of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ workers. For their final projects, students will apply their semester’s learning to an Oral History, interviewing and analyzing the work experiences of a friend or family member. Our final unit will look toward the future, as we examine AI and the future of American labor.
Prerequisites: Any combination of 2 ILA (HSS, LTA, CSP, LVA, CVA)
