The Operations Management concentration signals a scholarly & professional interest in the systems & processes that actualize a venture’s business strategy. These include design, development, production, distribution and the customer interface of both products, and services. The interdisciplinary nature of Operations management means professionals in the field are often some of the most sought-after and effective executive leaders within many industries and family businesses. To satisfy the Operations Concentration requirement, students must take four courses from the list of the elective courses below and earn a total of 14 – 16 credits towards their degree.
Students interested in careers in Operations may desire a variety of different pathways for their career. Here we provide some potential career paths and some suggested courses within the concentration to help support students’ interests in these areas.
This concentration can help prepare students for careers in Supply Chain Management such as Inventory Manager, Procurement Manager, Product Manager, Production Planner and these students may wish to take courses such as OIM 3573 Supply Chain Management, OIM 3519 Simulation Modeling in Operations Management, and MKT 3540 Retailing Management.
It can also help students prepare for careers in Innovation & Design such as Entrepreneur, NPD Project Manager, Designer, Customer Research/Acquisition through courses like OIM 3517 Design Thinking and Problem Solving for Business Impact, OIM4520 Leading Innovation: Gorillas, Chimps, and Monkeys, and OIM 3578 Integrated Product Design. Students interested in Product/Program Management to pursue careers like Product Manager, Program Manager, and Project Manager are encouraged to explore OIM 3509 Project Management.
Finally, students interested in roles in Process and Systems Improvement such as Process Manager, Systems Director, and Team Leader should consider courses like OIM 3501 Global Tech Innovation Lab, OIM 3519 Simulation Modeling in Operations Management, and OIM 3536 Scaling Lean Ventures.
